EASTON, Pa.– The Lafayette field hockey team opened the 2023 season with a 5-0 victory on Friday evening at Rappolt Field.
Junior midfielder
Lineke Spaans earned the first goal of the season at 5:10 in the first quarter with a flick over the goalkeeper. In the second period,
Catalina Rubel sank a rebound at 23:51 prior to a corner shot by
Josephine van Wijk at 29:10 to earn a 3-0 Leopard lead at the half.
The Seahawks remained scoreless as Spaans tallied her second goal of the game at 32:36 to hold the advantage with one quarter left to play.
Van Wijk put back another corner hit from the top of the circle, assisted by freshman
Katie Gibb and Spaans, for a 5-0 final.
The Leopards held the advantage in total shots (15-4) and penalty corners (5-1).
Lafayette's sophomore goalkeeper
Raffi Fragomeni made two saves on two shots faced in the victory. Her Seahawk counterpart, Sam Black, made six saves on 11 shots on goal.
The Leopards host Ohio State at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
