WASHINGTON, D.C.– The Lafayette field hockey team dropped a road game against American, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon in the William I Jacobs Recreational Complex.
It was a battle in the midfield during the first period, with neither team finding a shot on goal for the first seven minutes. The Leopards earned a pair of penalty corners just under the nine-minute mark, where
Josephine van Wijk connected with senior
Ariel Schumacher on her second attempt at a drive from the top.
American's Megan Hoffman scored the equalizer at 18:58 for a 1-1 tie at the halftime break.
Another seven-minute period of strict midfield play was disrupted in the third quarter when the Eagles took the lead following a penalty corner of their own at 38:05.
American's Charllene Boshoff sealed the 3-1 contest with her second of the game at 49:57 in the final period.
The Eagles held the advantage in total shots (7-4) and penalty corners (5-2).
Lafayette's sophomore goalkeeper
Raffi Fragomeni and her Eagle counterpart, Bryn Underwood, made two saves each.
Next up, the Leopards welcome Holy Cross to Rappolt Field on Sept. 30.
