Men’s Basketball Improves to 2-0 in League Play

Vander Baan and Jenkins hit double figures in road win

BOSTON, Mass. – Justin Vander Baan and Kyle Jenkins powered Lafayette to a 2-0 record in Patriot League play with a 59-51 win at Boston U. on Saturday afternoon in Case Gymnasium.

The duo posted 16 and 14 points, respectively. Vander Baan grabbed nine rebounds and recorded four blocks for the third game this season. The Northbridge, Mass. native has yet to complete a game without a block. Jenkins shot a team-high 63.6 percent from the floor on 11 attempts.

Boston opened the contest with a 17-6 run, fueled by Ethan Okwuosa and Otto Landrum's five points apiece, by the 12-minute mark.

The Leopards used four points from freshman Josh Wyche in a 9-4 spurt, trailing 21-15 at 5:02.

Ryan Pettit combated the Terriers' five points thereafter with two successful shots from beyond the arc in the final two minutes, including a 3-point buzzer beater. Lafayette went into the halftime break in a five-point deficit, 26-21.

Senior forward Jenkins brought the Leopards within one, 30-29, at 15:05, putting six points on the board during an 8-4 Lafayette stretch to begin the second half. Lafayette continued to forge ahead with a 9-4 run, leading 38-34, at the 12-minute mark thanks to four points by Vander Baan, showing out in his home state.

Boston responded with a pair of 3-pointers at 8:32 and 8:04, to regaining a 44-40 advantage.

The Maroon and White quickly fired back with a 14-4 run down to 1:15 as Vander Baan and Jenkins combined for 13 points, stealing the lead once more, 54-48.

The Terriers attempted to regain possession after a 3-pointer by Anthony Morales at 0:31 and began fouling within the final minute, allowing for a flurry of five Lafayette free throws by Devin Hines (2) and Eric Sondberg (3), who sealed the 59-51 final.

Lafayette held Boston to 30.2 percent from the field and 30.8 percent from 3-point range overall. Nico Nobili led the Terriers with 13 points and added five rebounds, three steals and a block.

The Maroon and White shot 14-of-19 from the charity stripe and had 22 points in the paint compared to the Terriers' 12.

Lafayette's last win at "The Roof" came on Feb. 6, 2019 when the Leopards shot an efficient 54.4 percent from the field in a 79-72 road victory.

Men's hoops travels to Colgate on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off in Hamilton, N.Y.
