EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette was dealt its first conference loss of the season on Saturday, dropping a 17-0 final to Georgetown at Fisher Stadium.
The Leopards' defense was tested throughout the day, as the Hoyas held an 18-minute advantage in time of possession. Senior Saiku White (10) and Preston Forney (8) combined for 18 tackles. Neriyan Brown and Tyree Morris each had seven tackles while Gabe DuBois added four pass breakups. Georgetown ran for 189 yards, led by 74 yards from Bryce Cox.Â
Lafayette's offense, which has been beset by injuries on the offensive line, never really gained any traction in the program's first home game since Sept. 14. The Leopards were held to 236 yards and shut out for the first time since Sept. 24, 2022 (12-0 at Penn). Georgetown intercepted Leopard quarterback Dean DeNobile four times, including three in the second half. He finished the day 10-of-38 for 167 yards and was sacked four times.
Georgetown snatched an early lead, booting a 26-yard field goal at 4:26 in the first quarter. The teams traded interceptions near the end of the quarter with Brown picking off his first pass of the season and third of his career. The Leopards returned the favor when a DeNobile pass intended for Mason Kuehner was picked off at the Georgetown 32-yard line.Â
Four minutes into the second quarter, Lafayette was moving the ball and faced a 4th-and-1 at the Georgetown 34-yard line. After a hand-off to Jamar Curtis, the ball was spotted short of the line to gain. Curtis finished the day with 53 yards on 14 carries.Â
The Hoyas took over on downs. Their ensuing drive resulted in a touchdown. Georgetown converted three third downs and one fourth down before Savion Hart punched in a one-yard TD. It capped a 14-play, 66-yard drive over 7:17 that sent the Leopards into the locker room trailing 10-0. Georgetown dominated time of possession in the initial half, 21:31 to 8:29.Â
Turnovers bit the Leopards again in the second half. A pass intended for Elijah Steward bounced off a defender's helmet and into the waiting hands of Cooper Blomstrom. On the next play, Georgetown's Udechukwu Enyerlbe scored on a 24-yard run up the middle. The visitors led 17-0. Â
Lafayette appeared to have potentially changed the tide near the end of the third quarter. Jaylon Joseph beat his defender and forced a fumble deep inside Georgetown territory that Reggie Thomas recovered. After review, however, it was ruled an incomplete forward pass, resulting in a punt instead of a turnover.Â
Offensively, Steward ended the day with four catches for 79 yards, needing one more reception to break into Lafayette's all-time top 10 for career receptions.Â
The Leopards remain at home on Oct. 19 at 12:30 p.m. to host Sacred Heart.
