WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Lafayette men's soccer team fell short in its 1-0 road loss at American on Saturday night.
The Eagles proved to be dangerous in the early moments of the match, getting the ball in wide areas and serving crosses into the box. However, when the Leopards did win the ball back, they were crafty on the counter.
Through the first 20 minutes, neither side recorded a shot on goal.
Lafayette had a big chance in the 33
rd minute. Senior forward
Lawrence Aydlett won the ball back in American's half and freshman midfielder
Cade Maglione ran onto Aydlett's through ball. The ball fell to sophomore
Roy Biegon who gave it back to Maglione, but the Eagles did well to smother the opportunity.
Three minutes later Biegon came close to the opening goal. Aydlett tracked down a second ball in midfield before spraying the ball wide to the Nairobi, Kenya native. Biegon traveled more than 50 yards with the ball before playing a wall pass with senior
Andrey McIntyre. The ball swung back to Aydlett who served the ball into the danger area, but it was too high for Biegon.
At the intermission, both sides were tied up (0-0).
The second half was full of coast-to-coast action, but the Eagles almost broke the deadlock in the 47
th minute. Reyes Parra struck a wide free kick on goal, causing Huff to react and push the effort wisely over the bar.
In the 67
th minute Troy Elgersma skyed a long-range effort over the bar after a Leopard turnover and Lafayette had its own half chance six minutes later. Lafayette won a corner kick which was floated into the box and sophomore defender
Nicholas Liebich headed the ball on goal but American goalkeeper Matthew Tibbetts made a comfortable save.
American scored the winner in the 87
th minute through Jared Weber, his first of the season.
Lafayette wraps up its non-conference schedule at 7 p.m. at home on Tuesday versus Stony Brook.
