BALTIMORE, Md. – Lafayette traveled to Baltimore on Friday night for a Patriot League matchup that ended in a Loyola victory (25-15, 25-18, 25-13).
The Greyhounds found an early 5-0 lead courtesy of kills by Lauren Link, Caitlin Churney and a pair of service aces by Riley Hamilton. Lafayette fought back to trailing 9-5, but a 3-0 spurt gave Loyola a 13-6 lead. Another 5-0 run by Loyola later in the set, handed the hosts an eight-point lead (19-11). Sophomore
Emma Patmon (2) and senior
Abby Nieporte (2) led the Leopards in kills in the first period, but Hamilton's quality service was the difference in the first set (25-16).
Churney and Hamilton guided the Greyhounds to a 3-0 lead to begin the second set, but a kill by junior
Abby Nicholson brought the Maroon and White within two points (9-7) of tying the game. Both sides then began to trade points, however a final 5-0 spurt gave Loyola the breathing room it needed, taking the second set 25-23.
Kacy Sekunda (4) and Link (5) combined for nine kills in the final set, guiding them to a 25-13 victory. Lafayette was within striking distance to begin the period (4-2), but Loyola continued to post small scoring runs, beginning to create a gap. Loyola's setting seemed to be the difference maker down the stretch, recording 11 more assists (15-4) than the Leopards.
Lafayette returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as it travels to Lewisburg for a matchup with Bucknell.
