Field Hockey Pushes Past Providence, 2-1

Seniors Alex Darrah and Lineke Spaans were Lafayette’s goal scorers

EASTON, Pa. – The Providence Friars came to Easton on Sunday afternoon for a non-conference clash at Rappolt Field that resulted in a 2-1 Leopards' victory.

The Leopards currently hold a 7-4 overall record and are 2-1 in Patriot League play.

Senior midfielder Lineke Spaans drove with the ball towards Providence goalkeeper Asia Porter's goal with 9:15 to go in the first quarter. The Bussum, Netherlands native skated past a few Friars prior to releasing a back-handed effort. Senior Alex Darrah and sophomore Stella Malinowski both crowded the goal waiting for a rebound and Darrah tapped it home (6:11).

At the 22:20 mark, Spaans doubled the Leopards' advantage. She received the ball on the half turn just outside Lafayette's attacking third. The International Affairs major weaved left and right before rifling a shot right past Porter, to boost the Maroon and White to a two-goal lead.

The Friars notched a goal back through Carly Van Benten with just less than four minutes left in the third quarter. On the day, the Leopards outshot Providence 17-4 and created two more penalty corners (7-5).

There were some tense defensive moments down the stretch, but Lafayette defended its penalty area well and captured its seventh win of the season at the final horn.

Porter finished her outing with 10 saves and junior goalkeeper Raffi Fragomeni was only called into action twice for Lafayette.

The Leopards return to Rappolt Field at 6 p.m. on Friday as they host archrival Lehigh.
