Lehigh Snaps Leopards’ Two-Game Series Win Streak

Curtis concludes 2024 campaign with 3,000 career rushing yards

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Running back Jamar Curtis eclipsed the 3,000-yard mark for career rushing yards as Lafayette's two-game series win streak was snapped in a 38-14 loss to Lehigh.

The Leopards still claim the all-time series record, 82-73-5, and have won four of the last six.

Curtis tallied 131 yards on the ground, marking his 16th career 100-yard rushing game. His two scores pushed him to sole possession of fourth place all-time for career rushing touchdowns. Receiver Elijah Steward entered the top 10 for career receiving yards and career receptions with his 10 receptions, 78 yard effort.

Lehigh kicked off the meeting by using a variety of rushes from Jaden Green, Luke Yoder and QB Matt Machalik. The Mountain Hawks took an early 7-0 lead when Green took a hand-off 19 yards for the score.

Lafayette quickly responded with a score of its own, courtesy of Curtis. The Waldorf, Md. native racked up 32 yards on the ground during the drive, along with moving into fifth all-time for career rushing yards and fourth all-time for rushing touchdowns.

On the ensuing possession, the Leopards forced QB Hayden Johnson to lob a pass downfield, finding the hands of DB Gabe DuBois for the interception. Curtis and WR Chris Carasia helped move the chains, but a sack on third down by Lehigh forced the Leopards to punt.

The Mountain Hawks took over on their 32-yard line committed to the run game. Yoder and Machalik gained 17 and 24 yards on back-to-back rushes. Machalik converted a 3rd-and-2 in the red zone before taking it himself for a 14-7 advantage for the bad guys.

Lehigh increased its lead to 14 after QB Hayden Johnson tossed a 23-yard pass into the endzone for WR Mason Humphrey. The Maroon and White put a drive together when QB Dean DeNobile connected on passes to TE Dallas Holmes and Steward. Looking for Steward yet again, DeNobile's shot at the end zone was picked off by Nick Peltekian.

With 1:01 left in the second quarter, the Mountain Hawks capitalized off of two of the Leopards' six penalties in the first half with a five-yard TD scramble by Johnson, making it 28-7 Lehigh at the halfway point.

Lafayette started the second half by using a heavy dose of Curtis. Curtis collected 53 yards of total offense on the drive, including a 13-yard run for the score, cutting the deficit to 14 once again.

Penalties continued to hurt the Leopards in the second half. Lafayette forced a 3rd-and-7 on Lehigh's opening possession in the third. On the play, the Maroon and White were called for two flags, both of which helped keep the drive alive for the Mountain Hawks. Lehigh dinked and dunked its way down the field before Nick Garrido booted a 31-yard field goal to increase the lead to 31-14. A pick-six late in the fourth quarter cemented the score at 38-14.

Lehigh freshman QB Hayden Johnson was selected as the game's MVP after tallying 140 total yards and two TDs.

The Leopards finished the 2024 season at 6-6 after a 9-3 mark last season. The Maroon and White will open the 2025 campaign on Aug. 30, 2025 when they take on Bowling Green on the road.
