Men’s Soccer Drops Final Match to Lehigh

With tonight’s result the Leopards were eliminated from post-season play

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men's soccer team hosted rival Lehigh on Tuesday evening at Gummeson Grounds Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium, which resulted in a 2-1 Lafayette defeat.

Senior midfielder Digger Iqbal called Lehigh goalkeeper Blake Koski into action within the first minute of the match, but the Bethlehem, Pa. native was up to the task. Despite the Leopards creating an early opportunity, the visitors had the better of the offensive play in the first half.

Lehigh outshot Lafayette in the first half (6-2) and created seven corner kicks to the Leopards' two. Senior goalkeeper Griffin Huff made three important saves in the first 45 minutes to keep the Mountain Hawks off the board.

At the intermission, both sides were tied 0-0.

The second half was action packed and chippy by both teams.

Lehigh opened the scoring in the 61st minute. Perry Kingson won the ball back for Lehigh before beating his man to the byline and squaring the ball back across Lafayette's goal mouth. Sam Davis was unmarked at the back stick and tapped home the lead for the visitors.

Beckett Wenger gave Lehigh a two-goal advantage in the 70th minute. A Leopard defender played a backwards pass looking for Huff, but Wenger intercepted the pass. Wenger then kept his composure and rifled the ball home.

The match's momentum began to shift as Lafayette threw more numbers forward. At the 82nd minute mark, Lafayette pulled a goal back through senior forward Andrey McIntyre. Freshman defender Joseph Lee found himself with some room 40 yards from goal before picking up his head. The Hasbrouck Heights, N.J. native whipped his cross into the box which found the head of a diving McIntyre, who beat Koski to his bottom-left corner.

Lafayette continued to push the tempo as time winded down, but Lehigh managed the game well to limit the Leopards' opportunities. At the final whistle, Lafayette was eliminated from post-season play.

The Leopards concluded the regular season with an 8-6-4 overall record and they were 3-4-2 in conference play.
