HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Colgate Raiders hosted the Lafayette volleyball team Friday night at Cotterell Court for Patriot League action, where Colgate advanced to 12-2 in the conference with a 26-24, 25-13, 25-16 final.
The initial 10 points were back-and-forth between both sides, but then Lafayette created a two-point lead (9-7) through a service ace by sophomore setter
Anna Van Wyk and an error by the Raiders. Colgate pulled back within one point (12-11), but junior
Carol Ulichney notched a kill and freshman
Destiny McKenzie grabbed a kill and an ace to take a 15-12 lead. The Raiders eventually tied the match at 17 apiece before a four-point run gave the hosts some breathing room. McKenzie had two huge kills to send it to extra points, but Abby Shadwick's back-to-back kills secured the first set for Colgate (26-24).
Colgate hit for .227 on its way to a 25-13 second set win. The Raiders posted 10 more kills than the Leopards (17-7) and they matched their four attack errors, despite having five more attempts. Deren Cukur had a big second period for the hosts, recording eight assists on 17 attempts.
Julia Headley (5) and Milan Bayless (4) combined for nine kills in the final period (25-16) to secure the sweep for Colgate. The Raiders opened the set with a 3-0 advantage but junior middle blocker
Hannah Ehrich-Pollock's two kills brought the Maroon and White within two (5-3). As the set wore on, Colgate put together small spurts to create more distance from Lafayette. Tiana Owens ended the game with a kill assisted by Ava Schabes.
Freshman setter
Mackenzie Calhoun found her teammates 18 times throughout the night and junior libero
Emily Gouldrup led Lafayette on defense with 12 digs.
Lafayette is back in action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as it travels to Holy Cross.
