WASHINGTON, D.C. - Men's basketball was downed by Atlantic-10 foe George Washington, 82-62, on Wednesday evening in the Charles E. Smith Center after a 10-day break due to Lafayette's final exams.
Lafayette's top performance came through freshman
Alex Chaikin, who knocked down 19 points on 7-of-11 from the floor.
Andrew Phillips followed up with 13 points and a trio of boards. Senior center
Justin Vander Baan blocked three shots this evening to add to his career total of 127, keeping him at third all-time in stops at Lafayette.
The Revolutionaries earned an initial 15-7 advantage at the 12-minute mark, as the Maroon and White were led by Chaikin's five points. A second Chaikin 3-pointer in the 10-0 Leopard run saw Lafayette steal the lead at 7:38, 19-16.
George Washington hit 4-of-5 from the floor to retake the advantage, 25-21, just three minutes later. The Revolutionaries continued along with an 11-3 stretch to 36-24 to close out the first half on top.
Junior
Ryan Pettit kicked off the second period with a 3-pointer just 30 seconds in to help Lafayette close the gap to five by 16:03, 39-34.
The Revolutionaries took control of the game with a 19-6 run over five minutes to push ahead by 18, 58-40, at the 10-minute mark. Seven opponents contributed in the spurt, led by Gerald Drumgoole with five points.
Caleb Williams and
Andrew Phillips combined for eight points down to 5:27 to bring the Leopards to 50, then trailing by 20 in the 82-62 final.
The hosts shot 49.2 percent from the field, sank eight buckets long distance and hit 16-of-17 from the charity stripe. Four Revolutionaries finished in double figures, led by Drumgoole's 30 points, four rebounds and two assists. George Washington out-rebounded Lafayette 43-26.
Next up, the Leopards fly to Oregon to face Portland on Saturday for a 4 p.m. (1 p.m. PST) tip-off.
