EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette men's basketball team took Colgate to the final minutes, 67-62, on Monday evening during a nationally televised contest in Kirby Sports Center.
Justin Vander Baan led three Leopards in double figures with 15 points, grabbing eight rebounds and blocked three shots.
Devin Hines (12) and
Kyle Jenkins (10) rounded out the group. Jenkins netted his 1,000
th career point in the second half.
Jenkins and Vander Baan hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Lafayette an 8-4 lead at 14:13 in the first half.
Colgate made a 16-7 run down to the seven-minute mark, using five scorers to gain a 20-15 advantage. Sam Thompson led the pack with five points in the spurt.
An even 14-14 run by 1:38 was broken by a layup and-one by Vander Baan as the Leopards honed in on the Raiders, trailing 34-30. In the stretch, Hines commanded Lafayette with five points, including a 3-pointer, while Keegan Records netted nine for the opponents.
Freshman
Mark Butler scored a last-second court-to-court bucket to close the gap to one, 34-33 at the halftime break.
Eric Sondberg opened the second half with a shot from beyond the arc before Vander Baan grabbed a board and a Bucket to trail 41-39 at 15:55.
Lafayette sank three 3-pointers by the six-minute mark, capped with a Vander Baan dunk, to re-take the advantage, 54-52.
Jenkins collected his 1,000
th career point at 2:13, a layup in traffic. The Higganum, Conn. native is the 49
th Leopard to reach the grand plateau as Lafayette led 62-59.
The Raiders retaliated with a final 8-0 run, including six free throws, to close out the contest.
Colgate shot 50 percent from the field and was held to 2-of-9 from beyond the arc. The Raiders had 32 points in the paint to Lafayette's 20. Records led the opponent with 21 points, shooting 7-of-11 from the field. He made seven of Colgate's 26 free throws.
The Leopards host Lehigh on Saturday at 2 p.m. for Senior Day and the 1998-99 Patriot League championship team reunion.
