EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette men's lacrosse team captured its third-straight win against Binghamton (19-12) Saturday afternoon at Fisher Stadium.
Senior captains
Charlie Cunniffe and
John Mathes connected for the Leopards' opening goal, after Mathes rifled home a shot at the 13:27 mark.
Kalman Kraham, Mathes,
Peter Lehman,
Connor Freeman and Cunniffe all found the back of the net in the first quarter, propelling Lafayette to a 6-1 lead.
Lehman opened the scoring in the second quarter with back-to-back goals assisted by sophomore
Aidan Kopen and Cunniffe. Liam Ferris responded two minutes later for Binghamton, cutting the Bearcats' deficit to six goals (8-2). Two more goals each from Mathes and Cunniffe handed the Maroon and White a 12-5 lead at the intermission.
The Leopards outscored Binghamton 3-2 in the third quarter. Cunniffe found the back of the net first, but consecutive goals from Ferris and Collin Delay on an extra-man opportunity brought Binghamton within six goals (13-7).
The Bearcats outscored Lafayette 5-4 in the final quarter, but three important saves by sophomore goalie
Joe Doherty kept Binghamton from completing the comeback. Doherty finished the contest with 15 saves.
Lafayette edged Binghamton 19-17 in faceoffs, with junior
Evan Prince going 12-23 on the afternoon while picking up a team-high eight ground balls along the way. Freshman
Nick Faccone won 7-12 of his duels from the spot.
The Maroon and White returns to Fisher Stadium at 12 p.m. on Mar. 3 to take on No. 14 Army.
