NEWARK, Del. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped its series opener to Delaware on Friday, 11-4, at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Delaware struck first in the opening game of the Leopards' three-game series in Newark, scoring a run in the first on an RBI-single by Aidan Kane for the 1-0 lead.
In the third, the Leopards responded by tying the game on a sac fly by freshman
Matt Colella that scored freshman
Luke Caucci from third, making the score 1-1.
The Blue Hens took the lead back in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs to take a 5-1 advantage. Delaware scored on a two-run double, an RBI-single and an RBI-ground out.
Delaware scored another run in the fifth and one more in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead.
Lafayette got a run back in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to senior
Blaze Fadio who scored Caucci and brought the score to 7-2.
The Leopards scored another run in the eighth on the third home run of the season for junior
Ben Petrone, cutting the Blue Hens' lead to 7-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, Delaware tallied four more runs, to make the score 11-3.
The Leopards scored a final run in the ninth on a Delaware error, bringing the final tally to 11-4.
Ethan Shaub was credited with the win while junior
Mike Romano took the loss.
The Leopards continue their series with Delaware on Saturday, with a game starting at 6 p.m.
