EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette softball cracked open the home portion of the 2024 ledger, hosting Le Moyne in a spring break doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore
Megan Coyle, who made the move to shortstop prior to the season, had a strong day at the plate, blasting a two-run home run in the first game, while going 3-for-4 in the night cap.
The visitors, who were coming off a doubleheader sweep of Delaware State on Tuesday, continued to swing hot bats on their way to 11-2 and 15-6 finals.
Game one saw the Leopards get on the scoreboard first, as Coyle ripped an offering to left field that plated classmate
Grace Hausamann (2-for-3) and gave Lafayette a 2-0 lead.
Le Moyne took its first lead with three runs on three hits in the second inning and then tacked on two more in the third. Back-to-back home runs from McKenzie Bergdoll and Frankie Larobardiere stretched the Dolphins' lead to 5-2.
The guests added one more in the fourth on an error and then five in the sixth to close out the game, with the bulk of the scoring coming on
Larobardiere's three-run home run that pushed the final to 11-2.
Rookie
Parker Rowden made her third appearance of the season, throwing 3.2 innings of relief, while not allowing an earned run.
In game two, Le Moyne banged out 18 hits and benefited from six Leopard errors. Lafayette trailed from the get-go, as Le Moyne plated three runs on four hits in the top of the first.
In the bottom half, Lafayette scored on a
Regan Dillon sac fly which pushed across
Mary Grace O'Neill, who had reached on a lead-off double.
In the second inning, Lafayette sent home two more runners. Junior
Kaya Ciccone-Cozart recorded her first career triple in her first game action of the season. Hausamann followed with an RBI-single, but the Leopards trailed 6-3 after three.
The Dolphins broke open the game with five runs in the fourth inning. Larobardiere continued her career day, belting a three-run homer.
Lafayette scored a run in the fourth (on an O'Neill groundout) and added two more in the last of the seventh, as Coyle doubled home a run and
Olivia Catalina ripped an RBI-single back through the box to push the final to 15-6.
Junior
Morrigan Gardiner tossed the final four innings of the game for Lafayette, allowed two earned runs on six hits over four innings.
Next up for the Leopards is the this weekend's University of Maryland softball tournament, where they will play Bryant at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Purdue Fort Wayne and Fairfield on Saturday and Maryland on Sunday.
