COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's hot bats proved to be too much for the Leopards on Sunday afternoon as the host Terrapins claimed an 8-0 victory over Lafayette softball in the final round of the University of Maryland Tournament.
Coming off a 5-3 win over Fairfield on Saturday afternoon, Lafayette could never really get things going offensively on Sunday, held to three hits (one each from
Mary Grace O'Neill,
Grace Hausamann and
Megan Coyle) over six innings.
The game was tied through two and a half innings before Maryland put two runs on the board on RBI-singles from Diamond Williams and Sydney Lewis. Williams was at it again in the fourth inning, connecting for a two-run home run following an RBI-triple from Jaeda McFarland.
Leading 5-0, the Terps pushed across another on an error in the fifth and closed out the game with two more in the sixth inning on a two-run single by Sammi Woods.
Morrigan Gardiner was the pitcher of record for the Maroon and White, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Jacqueline Cal threw 14 pitches in two-thirds of an inning and did not surrender a run. Genevieve Ebaugh collected the circle victory, completing six innings while scattering three hits and striking out four.
The Leopards are slated to be back in action on Saturday when they open Patriot League play with a doubleheader vs. Bucknell at noon.
