EASTON, Pa. – Senior guard
Makayla Andrews led Lafayette's offense with 22 points in the team's 56-45 defeat to Bucknell on Saturday afternoon inside Kirby Sports Center.
It was Senior Day for the women's basketball program. Before tip-off, seniors
Kayla Drummond and Andrews were honored for all of their hard work over their four-year careers on College Hill.
Drummond is averaging seven points per game this season and ranks sixth in the conference in rebounds. The Ontario, Canada native intends to graduate this spring with a Government and Law degree.
Andrews became the 20
th 1,000-point scorer in the history of Lafayette women's basketball on Jan. 24 against Loyola. Andrews was named to the 2022-23 All-Patriot League Third Team and has recorded over 500 rebounds in her career. The Neptune, N.J. native intends on graduating with a degree in English.
Bucknell held an early 7-2 advantage out of the gate. Sophomore forward
Emma Shields (two points) cut the Leopards' deficit to three points (9-6), after she finished her fast-break layup. Bucknell responded with a bucket, but junior forward
Halee Smith reduced Lafayette's deficit to two points (11-9) with a triple to end the first quarter.
Sophomore guard
Kay Donahue (four points) tied the game at 11 apiece with 9:42 remaining, after her fast-break layup found the bottom of the basket. After Andrews connected on a mid-range jumper, Bucknell went on a 10-2 run, giving them a 24-15 lead with 4:33 to go in the first half. The Leopards responded with a 6-2 scoring spurt, ultimately trailing 26-21 at the intermission.
The first six minutes of second half action were neck-and-neck. Andrews tied the game (32-32) with a fast break jumper at the 3:47 mark. The Bison proceeded to take the lead back (38-32) with a 6-0 spurt. With 10 minutes to go in Easton, Lafayette trailed 40-37.
A Donahue steal and score plus Andrews going one-for-two at the line, tied the game at 40 points each with 8:52 to go. The Bison responded with a 12-0 run to effectively close out the game. With today's result, Bucknell improved to 12-16 on the season.
The key to today's contest was ball retention. Lafayette turned the ball over seven more times than Bucknell (15-8) and Bucknell dished out two more assists than the Maroon and White (11-9).
The Leopards are back on the road for their final regular-season matchup at 7 p.m. in Worcester, Mass. against Holy Cross.
