Leopards Drop Doubleheader at Navy

Fadio hits his fifth home run of the season

ANNAPOLIS, Md.  – Lafayette baseball dropped both halves of a doubleheader against Navy on Saturday, falling 6-5 and 16-4 at Max Bishop Stadium.

The Leopards struck first in game one, scoring four runs in the second inning. Senior Blaze Fadio led off the inning with a walk and proceeded to steal second. Junior Ben Patrone drew the second walk of the inning, putting two runners on base for senior Michael Mallas. Mallas hit an RBI-double off the wall in left field to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead. Senior Justin Grech followed, lining an RBI-double to left field to plate Petrone. The Leopards scored another run on a Navy throwing error and then freshman Luke Caucci hit a sacrifice fly to left field, which gave the Leopards a 4-0 lead.

Navy responded in the bottom of the inning, with an RBI-single to right field, to make the score 4-1. The Mids scored three more runs in the third on a two-run home run and an RBI-single to tie the game 4-4. Navy took the lead in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single to left field, increasing its advantage to 6-4.

Lafayette attempted to make a comeback in the top of the seventh as Grech doubled and then scored on an RBI-single to left center field by freshman Matt Colella, bringing the final tally to 6-5.

Tyler Grenn collected the win for the Mids, pitching 6.2 innings, giving up six hits, five runs and striking out three while Landon Kruer garnered the save. Junior Joe Skapinetz took the loss for the Leopards, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up 10 hits, six runs and striking out four.

In game two, Navy jumped out to a quick advantage, scoring eight runs in the second and five runs in the third, to take a 13-0 lead en route to the 16-4 final.

Lafayette responded in the fifth, scoring two runs in the frame. Fadio doubled down the left field line, and later in the inning freshman Teddy Cashman blasted his second home run of the year to right center field, making the score 13-2.

In the sixth, the Leopards scored again. Sophomore Ethan Swidler walked and Fadio rocketed a two-home run down the left field line, to make the score 13-4.The home run was Fadio's fifth of the year. 

Navy added two more runs to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, which brought the final tally to 16-4.

Matthew Shirah earned the win, giving up four runs on three hits over six innings while striking out eight. Sophomore Trace Florio took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits with two K's. 

The Leopards close out their series with Navy on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. at Max Bishop Stadium.
