O’Neill Sets Single-Season Stolen Bases Record vs. Colgate

Junior outfielder breaks 40-year old record in game two

EASTON, Pa. – The first innings of both ends of Saturday's softball doubleheader proved to be decisive, as Colgate scored nine runs in the opening at-bats in 12-1 and 8-0 finals.

In the first game, Colgate batted around the order en route to five runs on four hits. The Raiders chased senior starter Kailee Sawai from the game after facing six batters and were aided by five free passes between Sawai and reliever Morrigan Gardiner. Colgate added three more runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth, as six different players drove in runs to stretch the final to 12-1.

Lafayette scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth. Kylene Gooch recorded a one-out walk and later scored when sophomore classmate Megan Coyle singled through the left side to run the final to 12-1. Bailey Misken (four strikeouts) claimed the circle victory over Sawai.

In game two the Raiders broke out for four runs in the first. Adrienne Nardone delivered a two-run double. Two batters later, Quinn Livesay lifted a Jacqueline Cal pitch over the wall in left field for a two-run home run and a 4-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the first, Mary Grace O'Neill drew a lead-off walk and then did more work on the bases. She stole second and third base. Her second swipe of the inning pushed her to 21 stolen bases for the season, setting a new single-season record at Lafayette. O'Neill passed Barb Matase and Linda Falcone, who had 20 stolen bases in 1988 and 1988, respectively.

Colgate starting pitcher, Maya Servedio, held the Leopards to one hit in the game, an O'Neill single in the third inning. Servedio struck out four of the 20 batters she faced. Cal took the loss, allowing eight runs on six hits.

The visitors closed out the game with Niamh Dougherty's three-run home run with two outs in the sixth.

The teams finish off the series with a 12 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
