Koczwara earns his first collegiate win

EASTON, Pa.  – The Lafayette baseball team won a back-and-forth contest, 6-5, against St. Peter's on Wednesday at Kamine Stadium. Freshman Luke Caucci hit a walk-off single to win the game for the Leopards.

The Peacocks wasted no time in getting on the board, as Garrett Greco lined the first pitch of the game down the right field line for a triple, and then came around to score on a sacrifice bunt by Ashby Vining. The next batter,Tyler Smith, blasted a home run to right field to give St. Peter's a 2-0 lead.

Neither team was able to score for the next three innings, but in the fifth, Lafayette struck back. Junior Michael Mallas was hit by a pitch and freshman Matt Colella advanced Mallas to second on a sacrifice bunt. Later in the inning, senior Blaze Fadio drove in Mallas on a double that got by the Peacocks' left fielder, making the score 2-1.

St. Peter's came right back in the sixth, when Logan Baker ripped a home run to left field, extending the Peacocks' lead to 3-1.

The Leopards continued to fight back in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, junior Easton Brenner hit a double to center field, which was quickly followed by a double off the bat of freshman Teddy Cashman that drove in Brenner and made the score 3-2.

Mallas led off the seventh, again getting hit by a pitch. Colella advanced Mallas to second on a sacrifice bunt and then sophomore Ethan Swidler slapped an RBI-single to right field, tying the game, 3-3.

St. Peter's loaded the bases in the top of the ninth and scored runs on bases-loaded walks to Ryan Dacey and Dominic Marabito, bringing the tally to 5-3.

In the bottom of the frame, with one out, Mallas was hit by a pitch for the fourth time in the game, which was followed by a Colella single and a Swidler walk, to load the bases for Fadio. Fadio ripped a two-run single to left field, scoring Mallas and Colella and tying the game, 5-5. Junior Justin Grech, who pinch ran for Swidler, was called out trying to advance to third on the play. Fadio stole second and put a runner in scoring position for Caucci. Caucci lined a walk-off RBI-single through the left side, scoring Fadio and giving the Leopards a 6-5 win.
