Leopards Hit Three Home Runs in 12-2 Win Over Army

Colella hits his first collegiate home run

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team took the final game of a three-game series from Army, 12-2, on Sunday at Kamine Stadium. The Leopards hit three home runs in the seven-inning contest, which was shortened from the scheduled nine innings because of the 10-run rule.

The Black Knights scored first for the third straight game. Derek Berg hit a solo home run to center field, to give Army a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Lafayette tied the game in the bottom of the second, when junior Easton Brenner scored on an Army error, to tie the score 1-1.

In the third, the Leopards took the lead. Freshman Matt Colella singled to start the inning and was followed by sophomore Ethan Swidler who walked. Later in the frame, freshman Teddy Cashman gave Lafayette a 3-1 lead. Cashman lined a two-run double just inside the first base bag and down the right field line, plating Colella and Swidler.

The Maroon and White continued to score in the fourth. Sophomore Ben Petrone blasted a solo home run over the fence in right center field. The home run was Petrone's sixth of the season. Later in the frame, Lafayette scored two more runs on an Army error. Brenner capped off the Leopards' four-run outburst driving an RBI-single to left field and scoring senior Blaze Fadio and making the tally 7-1.

The Black Knights responded with a run in the fifth, scoring on a bases-loaded walk, to bring the score to 7-2.

In the sixth, Lafayette's offensive continued to produce. Swidler sent the first pitch of the frame over the fence in left field. The home run was Swidler's sixth of the season. Cashman slapped a two-run double down the right field line and then came around to score on a wild pitch, giving the Leopards an 11-2 lead

Colella ended the game in the seventh with a solo home run that made the final score 12-2. The home run was the first collegiate home run for Colella.

Lafayette starter freshman Tristan Helmick allowed just two runs on five hits on the afternoon, while striking out six in 4.2 innings of work. Helmick earned his second win of the season. Steven Graver took the loss for Army.

The Leopards are next in action when they host Villanova on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
