BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior midfielder
Sophia Spallone hoisted women's lacrosse to the program's first Rivalry victory since 2013 on Wednesday evening, 11-10 in double overtime, on Frank Banko Field.
The Leopards got the initial upper hand after a 2-1 first period with a pair of goals by
Haleigh Albrecht.
Lehigh outscored Lafayette 5-3 through the second quarter for a 6-5 advantage at the halftime break.
Kristin Igneri added two goals in the third period for her first career hat trick as the Maroon and White trailed 8-7 with the final 15 minutes of regulation ahead of them.
Two goals by Lehigh's Emma Eberhardt were equalized by
Abby Romano and
Clare Culligan early in the fourth quarter to close the gap back to one, 10-9. Igneri assisted
Olivia Hover's game-saving tally at the one-minute mark to send the contest to overtime.
The first and second overtime periods went by scoreless until 2:11 as Spallone sent the Leopards back to College Hill with a successful Rivalry outcome. The Yorktown Heights, N.Y. native gained possession at the top of the arc and sealed her score with a spinning left-handed shot towards the lower net.
Lafayette held the advantage in draw controls (14-13) while Lehigh claimed more ground balls (16-14) and both teams took 31 shots. The Mountain Hawks secured all 21 clears to the Leopards' 24-of-28.
Lafayette's senior goalkeeper
Lexie Coldiron made 11 saves in the victory, totaling 484 in her four-year career. Her Lehigh counterpart, Hayley Hunt, made 12.
The Leopards conclude the season with a 5-11 (2-7 PL) overall record.
