Leopards Fall to Lehigh, 13-12

Junior Riley Sullivan led the offense with three goals

EASTON, Pa. – Junior midfielder Riley Sullivan scored a hat trick in the team's 13-12 loss against rival Lehigh on Friday evening inside Fisher Stadium.

Prior to the opening faceoff, the men's lacrosse program honored its 16 seniors for all of their hard work and dedication over their collegiate careers on College Hill.

The Leopards took an early 3-0 lead with 12:34 remaining in the first quarter after Sullivan rifled home two goals and senior captain Charlie Cunniffe found the back of the net. The remaining 12 minutes of the quarter were back-and-forth until Peter Theodoropoulos got the Mountain Hawks on the board with a goal with 58 seconds to go. After 15 minutes in Easton, the Maroon and White led 3-1.

Dakota Eierman opened the scoring 46 seconds into the second quarter to cut Lafayette's advantage to one goal (3-2). The Leopards responded with back-to-back goals courtesy of Sullivan and senior Jacob Freeman. The Mountain Hawks clawed their way back with two goals of their own, after Richard Checo and Scott Cole rifled home with 3:03 left in the first half. Senior Kalman Kraham extended Lafayette's lead to two goals (6-4) to close the first half of play.

Third quarter action was all in favor of Lehigh. Cole started the scoring for Lehigh just over a minute into the second half. Neither team could get anything going for several minutes until Grant Rodny tied the game (6-6) at the five-minute mark. Quinn Armstrong provided Lehigh its first lead of the game, after finding the back of the net with 2:20 to go in the third period. With 15 minutes to go in Fisher Stadium, the Mountain Hawks led 7-6.

As the fourth quarter began, freshman faceoff specialist Nick Faccone won the duel, sprinted down field and set up senior captain Peter Lehman for his first goal of the day. Just two minutes later, Lehman found the back of the net again after blowing by his man. After Lehigh responded with a goal, senior John Mathes restored Lafayette's lead (9-8) with 10:25 left in the game.

Andrew Kelly and Armstrong took back Lehigh's lead (10-9) with 7:38 left in the contest, but freshman Jack Massotto tied the game just 43 seconds later. Armstrong and senior Carter Cecil exchanged goals with 5:21 to go, prior to Mathes giving Lafayette a 12-11 lead with just under four minutes remaining. Dakota Eierman tied the game at 12 goals apiece for the Mountain Hawks and Andrew Kelly won the game with three minutes left on the clock. Lafayette had a good chance to tie the game with 25 seconds to go, but a turnover for the Leopards ended the game.
