EASTON, Pa - Lafayette baseball was outlasted in a hard-fought, mid-week contest by Monmouth, 7-6, on Wednesday at Kamine Stadium.
Lafayette got on the board first in the bottom of the first. Junior
Michael Zarrillo lined an RBI-triple to right field that scored sophomore
Ethan Swidler and senior
Blaze Fadio followed with an RBI-groundout, giving the Leopards a 2-0 lead.
Monmouth tied the game in the third on a bases-loaded walk and a sac fly, making the score 2-2.
The Hawks took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a solo home run by Harry Padden.
The Leopards stormed back in the sixth, loading the bases for freshman
Ryan Grace who lined a three-run triple just inside the right field line, giving the Maroon and White a 5-3 lead. Grace was followed by senior
Michael Mallas who made the Leopards' tally 6-3 on a sac fly.
Monmouth regained the lead in the eighth, scoring on a wild pitch, an RBI-single by Padden, a double steal and an RBI-single by Brendan Buecker, to make the tally 7-6.
The Leopards got the tying run to third in the ninth, but were not able to push another run across the plate.
J.D. Greely collected the win for the Hawks, pitching a scoreless seventh inning. Dante Ciaramella earned the save, striking out three and throwing two scoreless innings. Freshman
John Milewski took the loss, giving up four hits and four runs in 0.2 inning.
Lafayette is back in action on Saturday as the Leopards are set to travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
