Leopards Open Season with a 3-0 Win Over Siena

Khachadourian scores her first collegiate goal

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette women's soccer team opened its 2024 campaign by posting a 3-0 victory over Siena on Thursday at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

The Leopards started the scoring in the 14th minute. Senior Ani Khachadourian recovered a deflected ball and blasted a straight-on strike past the Siena keeper to give the Maroon and White a 1-0 lead. It was the first collegiate goal for Khachadourian. The Lafayette defense held strong for the remaining 31 minutes of the first half, taking the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

In the second half, the offense continued to click. In the 52nd minute, after a pass from senior Alexa Jindal, junior Katrina Santelli created an opportunity for herself on the doorstep of the goal, slicing a shot past an oncoming Saints' defender and into the lower right corner of the goal, extending the Leopards' advantage to 2-0.

In the 83rd minute, 2023 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, Nadia Zaffanella, got on the board for the first time in 2024. After receiving a pass from senior Gretchen Waechter, Zaffanella ripped an off-balance shot to the left corner of the goal, which increased the Lafayette lead to 3-0.With the third goal of the match, the Leopards have scored three goals in a home contest for the first time since 2022, when they defeated St. Peter's 3-1 on Aug. 28.

The Leopards finished the afternoon with 14 shots, nine of which were on goal. The Saints recorded 10 shots, with six on goal. Lafayette had eight corner kicks, while Siena had two. The Maroon and White were led by Jindal, who had four shots, with two on goal. Both Khachadourian and Zaffanella had multiple shots, recording two and three, respectively.

Sophomore Catherine Apker recorded her first collegiate win and shutout for the Leopards, playing the full 90 minutes and recording six saves. Her Siena counterpart, Maddie Finn, also played the full 90 minutes and recorded six saves.
