SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Lafayette volleyball team was defeated by ACC opponent Syracuse on Friday night in four sets (25-13, 25-19, 21-25, 25-13).
Syracuse led 6-5 in the first set prior to going on a five-point run courtesy of a kill from Skylar George and some errors by the Leopards. Lafayette responded with its own four-point spurt after a service ace by sophomore middle blocker,
Irelynd Lorenzen and errors by Syracuse. Despite the Leopards tenacity, Syracuse took the first set 25-13.
Set two was back-and-forth in the early going. The Leopards trailed 10-6 before four attack errors and a kill from sophomore outside hitter,
Ally Feczko, gave Lafayette a one-point lead (11-10). Syracuse led 16-14 before it began to pull away. Ava Palm (6) and George (5) did great work down the stretch, combining for 11 kills in the second set. After two periods of play, the Orange led 2-0.
Lafayette took a 9-8 lead in the third set and never looked back. The Maroon and White held a 14-11 advantage before the offense exploded on a six-point spurt. Feczko, junior
Carol Ulichney and junior
Hannah Ehrich-Pollock all compiled kills during the run. Syracuse made its way back to only being down by two points (23-21), but Lorenzen finished the set off with a kill assisted by classmate
Anna Van Wyk.
The Orange regained their momentum in the fourth set, jumping out to an early 10-7 lead. Syracuse kept its foot on the gas and its three blocks proved to be crucial. Anastasiia Nikolnikova granted Syracuse the victory (25-13) with a kill assisted by Veronica Sierzant and Syracuse improved to 2-0 on the season.
Lafayette is back in action Saturday morning at 11 a.m. as it continues Salt City Classic action against NJIT.
