EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team concluded a two-match homestand, defeating NJIT, 1-0, on Sunday at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
The Leopards struck first in the 13th minute, when senior
Alexa Jindal weaved around multiple defenders and ripped a shot past NJIT goalkeeper Samatha Constantine, to give Lafayette a 1-0 lead. The goal was Jindal's first collegiate goal.
Jindal continued to pepper the NJIT keeper with two more shots on goal, as the teams headed to the halftime break with the Maroon and White leading 1-0.
In the second half, NJIT came up with the best scoring opportunity of the half for either team. In the 57th minute, Briana Andreoli got past the Lafayette defense and had an open net, but sent her shot off the left post. The Highlanders threatened to score one more time, when a foul on Lafayette led to a straight-on free kick at the top of the box, with two seconds remaining in the match. Leopards' junior
Katrina Santelli headed the free kick away, clinching the 1-0 victory for Lafayette.
Lafayette recorded eight shots, while NJIT had six. The Leopards were led by Jindal in shots, with five, all of which were on goal. Sophomore
Catherine Apker played the full 90 minutes, recording two saves and earning her third shutout of the season. Her NJIT counterparts, Constantine and Mojisola Ayodele, split time evenly in goal, and recorded three and two saves, respectively.
The Leopards open up Patriot League when they travel to Holy Cross on Saturday at 1 p.m.
