EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette volleyball team fell to Patriot League foe Colgate in three sets (25-17, 25-13, 25-13) Friday night at Kirby Sports Center.
The Leopards grabbed an early 3-0 lead thanks an attack error by the Raiders and back-to-back aces by junior libero
Emily Gouldrup. Lafayette held a 14-10 lead before an 8-0 run by Colgate put the Raiders back in front (18-14). Milan Bayless was the highlight of the first set for the Raiders, finishing with nine kills as Colgate took the first set, 25-17.
Lafayette took a 4-2 lead to begin the second period, which featured kills by sophomore outside hitter
Emma Patmon, freshman outside hitter
Paige Chmura and an ace by Gouldrup. The score was 6-3 before Colgate tallied another eight-point scoring spurt, now taking a 11-6 lead. Abby Shadwick, Greta Hoogstra and Bayless combined for 12 kills in the second set. The Leopards never found their offensive rhythm dropping the second set 25-13.
The third set of action came down to offensive efficiency. Colgate tallied 11 kills in the final set with a single attack error and the Leopards recorded five kills and eight attack errors. The Raiders were also a physical force up front, recording four blocks to the Leopards' one. Colgate's offense and Sydney Jones' serves proved to be crucial in the final set, handing Colgate its first conference win of the season.
Lafayette returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday as it invites Holy Cross to Easton.
