RICHMOND, Va. – The Lafayette volleyball team dropped its second game of the season to Winthrop in three sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-17) Friday afternoon on day one of the VCU Invitational.
The Eagles began the first set by garnering a 6-0 lead after Avery Jolley and Rachel McCollum registered kills. A kill from senior
Abby Nieporte later in the set brought the Leopards within one point (7-6) of tying the game, but Winthrop continued its offensive efficiency. A five-point run gave the Eagles a 14-7 lead, leading them to quickly close out the first set, 25-18.
Winthrop continued to find small scoring runs, while limiting Lafayette's in the second set. The Eagles led 9-5 prior to going on a four-point spurt thanks to kills from Jolley and Paige Bennett. The Eagles later held a 17-14 lead and began to pull away. Kills by Jolley and Bennett along with some errors by Lafayette, gave Winthrop a 2-0 advantage heading into the third set.
The Maroon and White were tied at seven apiece in the early moments of the final set. Both teams exchanged points between the next few serves, but Jolley (5) and Bennett (6) were the difference makers on offense for the Eagles. Lafayette trailed 21-17 before a four-point run from the Eagles closed out the match.
The Leopards return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday to conclude their VCU Invitational slate against Virginia Tech.
