Colgate Contains Men’s Hoops in Kirby Matinee

Phillips nets a career-high 18 points

EASTON, Pa. - Colgate used a 58 percent shooting performance from the field to knock off the Lafayette men's basketball team 90-67 on Saturday afternoon in Kirby Sports Center.

Sophomore guard Andrew Phillips was the Leopards' main option, finishing with a career-high 18 points and seven rebounds. Justin Vander Baan (17) and Alex Chaikin (12) also scored in double digits. The Maroon and White shot 42 percent from the floor and made nine steals despite Colgate leading for over 39 minutes of play.

The Raiders used a seven-point performance from Jalen Cox to jump out to a 23-12 advantage by the 12-minute mark. Colgate shot 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and knocked down 9-for-13 from the floor in the opening span.

The opponents proved they were eager to clinch their second road win of the conference stretch, continuing on to a 40-21 lead at 5:04.

Phillips and the starting freshmen duo of Caleb Williams and Chaikin quickly put a stop to the advance, hitting a trio of 3-pointers before halftime, trailing 50-31 into the locker room.

Colgate built its lead up to as many as 27 in the second half, 64-37 at 16:34.

Phillips threw up back-to-back 3-pointers at the 14-minute mark in an attempt to address the gap, starting an 18-14 Lafayette spell through the next 10 minutes, still in the shadows at 78-60.

Nicolas Louis-Jacques and Jeff Woodward added six points apiece to conclude the afternoon amid a 12-7 Raider spurt, 90-67.

Colgate featured an even scoring attack with four Raiders in double figures led by Louis-Jacques' 21 points, highlighted by five 3-pointers.

The Raiders out-rebounded the hosts 40-28 overall, but Lafayette took an 11-10 edge on the offensive glass.

Next up, the Leopards head to Loyola Md. on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
