Bucknell Prevails in Overtime Against Men’s Hoops

Six of the last eight matchups with the Bison required extra minutes

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Sophomore Andrew Phillips' career-high 16 points helped men's basketball take Bucknell to overtime, falling in a 65-62 heartbreaker on Wednesday evening in Sojka Pavilion.

The Chester Springs, Pa. native filled the scoresheet with seven rebounds, two steals and a block. Senior co-captain Justin Vander Baan followed that performance with his second double-double of the season on 14 points and 10 rebounds, not to mention five blocks.

Lafayette out-rebounded the Bison 39-35, including a 17-12 margin in the second half. Neither program had much success at the charity stripe, both shooting under 55 percent.

The Bison jumped out to a 9-2 lead through the first five minutes of the contest. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Josh Bascoe kept Bucknell in the lead, 26-19, despite even play to 7:11.

Phillips' four point helped the Leopards cut the lead to 27-25 by the one-minute mark. A turn-around jumper by Vander Baan with 14 seconds left took Lafayette into the locker room trailing 33-27.

To open the second half, the Bison extended their lead to 40-30 by the 18-minute mark. Lafayette worked hard to put together a 13-6 run, fueled by Caleb Williams' six points, to get within three (46-43) at 7:43. Phillips' 3-pointer just a minute later tied the game, 48-48 at the six-minute mark.

The Maroon and White's defense held the Bison to one bucket for the following three minutes and Lafayette captured its first lead of the game, 52-50 at 3:01. Bucknell fouls gave way to two free throws apiece for Mark Butler and Alex Chaikin, which extended the 56-53 Lafayette advantage into the final minute.

Bascoe knocked down his fourth 3-pointer of the evening to help the hosts to a two-point blanket, 58-56 (0:33). The Leopards drew up a final play with nine seconds remaining in regulation, resulting in a three-point miss by VanderBaan and a putback by Phillips to send the contest to overtime, knotted at 58.

The hosts outscored Lafayette 7-4 in the extra minutes. The Leopards trailed 63-62 with 20 seconds on the clock, before a missed layup by Williams forced the team to foul. Chaikin then attempted a game-winning throw which did not get off in time.

Bucknell shot 40 percent from the field, fronted by Bascoe's 23 points. He was also credited with five of Bucknell's nine tallies from beyond the arc. The Maroon and White shot 43 percent from the field while being held to 18 percent from long distance on 17 tries.

Next up, the Leopards invite Holy Cross to Easton on Saturday for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
