Volleyball Falls to Holy Cross, 3-0

Mbeche-Odhiambo tallies seven points

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-17) decision to Holy Cross on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center. Soph. Auma Mbeche-Odhiambo led the Leopards with seven kills, while also adding a block assist.

The Maroon and White opened the beginning set on a 7-1 run. Senior Carol Ulichney notched a kill and service ace while Mbeche-Odhiambo added two kills of her own. Three points later, the Crusaders faced a 9-2 deficit. Emma Sorenson's kill jump-started a seven-point stretch to knot the score at 9-9. Over the spurt, Sorenson recorded three service aces. The teams traded scores before back-to-back aces from Mackenzie Calhoun created space for Lafayette (15-12). Holy Cross countered, with a five-straight points (19-16) to flip momentum. The Leopards used a trio of attack errors and a kill from Abby Nicholson to cut the visitors' advantage to 24-23, but KK Green closed out a 25-23 set one victory with a kill.

The Crusaders gained a 6-1 lead over Lafayette early in the second set, with Emma Sorenson racking up three kills. A stretch of five consecutive points pushed the score farther down the stretch (18-9). Destiny McKenzie (2) and Ulichney (1) slapped kills towards the end of set two before Lacey Murphy knocked down one of her eight match kills for a 25-16 win. McKenzie's two kills led Lafayette in set two. Nicholson collected a block, one of five for the Leopards in the match.

After 20 points in set three, Holy Cross held an 11-9 advantage. Shortly after, runs of three and eight points allowed the visitors to capture a 25-17 final and a 3-0 match win. Ally Feczko tallied three of her four kills in the final set. Mbeche-Odhiambo and Ulichney added in two kills of their own. Calhoun finished the evening with nine assists, four of which occurred in set three.

After a week off, Lafayette travels to Oct. 24 for a 7 p.m. meeting with Navy.
