EASTON, Mass. - Men's basketball took Stonehill to the final seconds, 74-70, at Stonehill on Friday evening in Merkert Gymnasium.
Freshman
Christian Humphrey-Rembert knocked down a 3-pointer to give Lafayette the lead, 7-3, after the opening six minutes of play. The Skyhawks put together an 8-4 stretch to the nine-minute mark to tie the game at 11-11.
Stonehill's Davante Hackett netted back-to-back shots beyond the arc to go ahead 19-14 at 7:38.
The hosts continued offensively to post a 34-25 lead at the halftime break. Hackett secured 11 points, made up of three 3-pointers, in the first half for his squad.
Stonehill kept its distance, 45-35, in the first seven minutes of the second period.
Andrew Phillips hit a long-distance bucket to stop Skyhawks at 12:56.
The Leopards crept as close as five, trailing 53-48, through the next six minutes.
A five-point differential still separated the two programs heading into the last three minutes of regulation, 65-60.
Stonehill's Hackett scored 2-of-3 at the free throw line (2:55, 2:50) to extend the gap to six, 68-63.
Caleb Williams drilled a left-sided 3-pointer to tie the game at 68 with 47 seconds remaining in regulation. The Skyhawks went ahead in their next possession using a shot on the floor, 70-68, causing a Leopard timeout.
A comeback at the line ensued with Williams making both his tallies in the final eight seconds, down 74-70.
Lafayette looked to Williams for the game-saving half-court bucket, which hit the backboard but wouldn't fall, in the final decision.
The Leopards will kick off the 2025 Lafayette Classic with Le Moyne on Nov. 28 at 4:30 p.m.
