Longhorns Top Men’s Hoops in Texas

Williams and Phillips combine for 38 points

AUSTIN, Texas - Men's hoops battled against Texas in a 97-60 loss on the road at Moody Center on Saturday afternoon.

Lafayette had two players finish in double figures, combining for a total of 38 points. Sophomore Caleb Williams tallied 20 points with three rebounds and two assists while senior Andrew Phillips added 18 points and four rebounds. 

After trading points back and forth to start the first half, the hosts jumped on the Leopards for a 9-0 run to take an 11-point lead, 17-6, by 14:55. With a layup by Phillips and a Williams' three-pointer, Lafayette closed the gap to six, 17-11, just one minute later. 

Texas continued control the tempo, taking its biggest lead of the afternoon, 36-14, at the seven-minute mark. Lafayette continued to fight, using Williams and Phillips to add a total of 11 more points and bring the score to 46-28 at the half.

Williams kicked off the second half with a drive to the basket, before the hosts knocked down two-straight jumpers to lead 50-30 (19:01). Lafayette surged forward as freshman Shareef Jackson tallied two buckets, pulling Lafayette as close as 19, 63-44 at the 13-minute mark. Williams and Phillips continued trading points as Lafayette's main options for the afternoon. 

The Longhorns led for the remainder of the game, shooting 64.3% from the floor and 50 percent from three. The hosts had six individuals in double figures, led by Tramon Mark with 16 points, two assists and two steals. 

Jackson, freshman Luke Bevilaqua and senior Ryan Pettit added eight, five and four points, respectively. Jackson and Pettit each grabbed three rebounds  

Lafayette shot 11-of-17 from the line with Williams knocking down a team-high 5-of-6 attempts.

The Maroon and White return to Kirby Sports Center on Thursday for a 6 p.m. tip-off, facing Colgate for the Autism Awareness/Triumph in Recovery game. The game is part of a doubleheader with the Lafayette women who play St. Peter's at 8:30 p.m.
