EASTON, Pa. – Guards
Talia Zurinskas (13) and
Abby Antognoli (11) led the Maroon and White in scoring in their 75-44 loss on Saturday at Kirby Sports Center. Colgate's Taylor Golembiewski dropped in a game-high 16 points to lead the Raiders.
Lafayette invited Colgate to Easton for the Leopards' annual National Women and Girls in Sports Day that doubled as their Play4Kay game. The women's basketball team wore its pink uniforms on Saturday to show its support for the Kay Yow Foundation and to promote the ongoing battle against cancer. Prior to tip-off, an all-sports girl's clinic was held in Kirby Sports Center that featured several of Lafayette's teams assisting with the event.
The visitors grabbed an 8-2 lead to begin proceedings, after Sophia Diehl drained a mid-range jumper at the 6:44 mark. Lafayette then began to take over, tying the game at 11 apiece (3:32) after a 9-2 scoring run. Both teams traded triples in the last three minutes of the quarter, but after 10 minutes the Raiders were on top 16-13.
Colgate held onto a narrow lead (25-21) in the early going of the second stanza. Then, a pair of jumpers from Zurinskas and free throws by sophomore guard
Teresa Kiewiet put Lafayette in front (28-27) with 4:29 to go in the half. Zurinskas finished the outing with a career-high 13 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Antognoli later granted Lafayette its largest lead of the game (four points) on a triple with just under three minutes remaining. The Raiders responded with an 8-2 spurt to regain a two-point advantage (37-25) at the half.
The Raiders outscored the Leopards 16-5 in the third period, led by six points from Morgan McMahon. The game was tied at 37 apiece at the 8:57 mark before Colgate began to get hot, and also limit Lafayette's attempts. An 11-0 run from the visitors handed them a 48-37 lead before a Kiewiet free throw ended the spurt. Colgate took nine more shots than Lafayette (19-10), stretching it to a 53-40 lead after three quarters.
The Leopards' cold shooting continued into the fourth quarter (4-21 in the second half) and at the final buzzer, Colgate collected its sixth conference win (6-4) of the campaign. Turnovers and rebounds were the keys to Saturday's contest. The visitors committed 10 fewer turnovers (17-7) than the Maroon and White, while owning the glass 38-25.
The Maroon and White take a week-long break before returning to action next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Navy.
