HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped two hard-fought contests, 7-6 and 18-4, to Southern Miss on a windy Saturday at Pete Taylor Park.
In game one, Southern Miss opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on a two-run home run by Ozzie Pratt.
In the fifth, freshman Liam Ebbs doubled to left center field for the Leopards, senior Easton Brenner was hit by a pitch and Matt Colella followed with a walk to load the bases. Junior Ethan Swidler ripped a two-run single up the middle that tied the game 2-2.
Senior Ben Petrone led off the sixth with a solo home run to left center field, giving the Leopards a 3-2 lead. Later in the inning, Brenner slashed a double down the left field line, extending the Lafayette lead to 5-2.
The Golden Eagles took back the lead in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-double by Matthew Russo and a three-run home run by Davis Gillespie to make the score 6-5.
The Maroon and White tied the game in the top of the ninth. A solo home run by Brenner to left field knotted the game, 6-6.
In the top of the tenth, the Leopards got a runner to second base, but could not score, sending the game to the bottom of the frame. Southern Miss won game one on a walk-off sacrifice-fly by Gillespie, that brought the final tally to 7-6.
Josh Och collected the win for the Golden Eagles, tossing a scoreless top of the tenth. Senior Corey Savedoff took the loss for the Leopards, pitching 0.2 innings, giving up one run.
In game two, Southern Miss jumped out to an early advantage, scoring two runs in the third, followed by eight runs in the fourth, a run in the fifth and seven runs in the seventh, to take an 18-0 lead after seven innings.
In the eighth, Colella ripped an RBI-single to left field and then senior Kaleb Willis followed with a sacrifice-fly to center field, making the score 18-2.
In the top of the ninth, Brenner sliced an RBI-single through the right side for his fifth hit of the doubleheader. Colella hit an RBI-ground out to third base that brought the tally to 18-4, which proved to be the final.
Matthew Adams earned the win for the Golden Eagles, scattering three hits over 6.0 innings of work, while striking out nine. Sophomore Tristan Helmick took the loss , throwing 3.1 innings, giving up three hits and four runs.
The Leopards are next in action on Sunday, when they close out their four-game series with Southern Miss at 1 p.m.
