Leopards Fall to Holy Cross

Lafayette returns to Kirby Sports Center at 2 p.m. on Saturday for The Rivalry

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette continued its Patriot League slate at Kirby Sports Center on Wednesday evening with an 83-42 loss. Holy Cross' Lindsay Berger netted a game-high 16 points and tacked on eight rebounds and seven assists.

The visitors hopped out to a 9-2 lead to start the game, after Mary-Elizabeth Donnelly drained a three-pointer. Guards Teresa Kiewiet (2) and Talia Zurinskas (4) sparked a 6-2 Leopards' run, reducing their deficit to three points (11-8) with 4:42 to go in the first quarter. The Leopards trailed 16-12 with 1:39 remaining prior to a 7-2 late run by the visitors. After 10 minutes on College Hill, the Crusaders led 23-14.

Lafayette struggled from the floor in the second quarter, leading to a dominant 10 minutes from Holy Cross. The Crusaders shot 61.5 percent (8-13) from the field in the stanza and 10 of their 19 points came in the paint. At the intermission, Holy Cross led 42-22.

Second-half action was much of the same, as the Crusaders outscored the Leopards 41-20. Holy Cross shot a scorching 66.7 percent from the field and 50 percent from downtown, collecting its 16th win of the season and ninth in conference play. The visitors had four players finish in double figures in points and Zurinskas led Lafayette in scoring, while matching her career-high 13 points.

The keys to Wednesday's matchup were hitting the boards and points in the paint. The Crusaders grabbed 19 more rebounds (41-22) than the Maroon and White and scored more than double their points in the paint (30-14).

The Leopards return home on Saturday for their Alumni Day and the first game of a rivalry double header. Lafayette women's basketball takes on Lehigh at 2 p.m. and the men's team hosts the Mountain Hawks at 5 p.m. for Senior Day.
