BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped both halves of its doubleheader against Western Kentucky on Sunday, falling 9-3 and 8-1 at Nick Denes Field.
In game one, Western Kentucky got on the board first in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on an RBI-single by Ryan Wideman and an RBI-ground out by Camden Ross, to make the score 2-0. The Hilltoppers again entered the scoring column in the second, as Ethan Lizama made the score 5-0 on a three-run home run.
Lafayette responded in the fifth, scoring on an RBI-fielder's choice by
Easton Brenner to make the tally 5-1.
Western Kentucky responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the frame to lead 7-1. Lafayette made the score 7-2 in the sixth, as the Leopards scored on an error.
In the top of the eighth, Lafayette scored on an RBI-single by
Ethan Swidler to move within 8-3 in the 9-3 final.
Drew Whalen struck out eight in the win, pitching five innings while giving up one run on two hits. Freshman
Kellen Moore took the loss for the Leopards, tossing 1.1 innings, while allowing six hits and five runs.
In game two, the Hilltoppers got on the board in the first, scoring a run in the first inning. Western Kentucky added to its lead in the third with back-to-back solo home runs by Kyle Hayes and Wideman, to move ahead 3-0.
The Hilltoppers scored another run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to stretch the lead to 6-0.
Lafayette got on the board in the top of the eighth after sophomore
Matt Colella reached on an infield single. Swidler ripped an RBI-double to left center field to drive in Colella and make the score 6-1.
Western Kentucky added two more runs to its total on a two-run home run by Lizama, which made the final margin 8-1.
Jack Bennett earned the mound victory, going 5.0 innings while giving up four hits and striking out five. Junior
Trace Florio was the pitcher of record for the Leopards, allowing three runs on six hits over three innings.
The Leopards are next in action when they travel to Davidson on Friday for a three-game series.
