BOSTON, Mass. - Men's basketball was defeated by Boston U. in the final seconds during Saturday afternoon's 66-64 outcome in Case Gymnasium. The Terriers' Kyrone Alexander hit the game-winning shot, a step-back jumper with 2.7 seconds on the clock to give the Leopards' their fifth conference loss by five points or fewer.
Next up, the seventh-seeded Leopards (12-19, 7-11 PL) are in place to host Holy Cross in a first-round game in the 2025 PenFed Credit Union Patriot League Championship on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Freshman
Alex Chaikin paced the Maroon and White for the second straight game with 24 points. The Williamsburg, Va. native hit on 8-of-12 from the floor, added three 3-pointers while going 5-for-9 from the charity stripe.Â
Caleb Williams and
Justin Vander Baan combined for 26 points and 16 rebounds as the remaining pair in double figures.
As the game opened, the Terriers led 17-12 at the 11-minute mark thanks to seven scorers contributing 7-of-14 form the floor and 3-of-5 beyond the arc. Chaikin knocked down two 3-pointers and secured a trio of free throws to get the Leopards as close as two, 27-25, by 3:04.
Justin Vander Baan then tied the game at 29-29 with a layup and-one at 1:05. Boston's Malcom Chimezie netted a mid-range jumper 15 seconds later to retake the advantage, 31-29, at the halftime break.
Lafayette kicked off the second half with a 12-9 stretch by 14:43 to steal a 41-40 lead. The freshman duo of Chaikin and Williams split the spurt with six points.
The Terriers, eager to extend their home win streak to 11 games, went on a 9-2 run down to the nine-minute mark, pushing out to a six-point lead, 49-43.
Back to-back three's helped the Leopards fight off the Terriers and tied the game at 52-52 with 6:46 left. Chaikin and Williams continued to guide Lafayette, combining for seven points over the next two minutes on the way to a 59-57 lead at 2:58.
Boston found three buckets from the charity stripe from 2:56 to 1:51 to regroup at 62-62.
Williams's next two free throws interrupted two step-back shots from Alexander, the second of which lifted the Terriers over the Leopards with 2.7 seconds remaining in regulation, 66-64.
Lafayette's final drawn play was an attempt by Williams from
Ryan Pettit, deep on the left side as time expired that hit both backboard and rim.
Miles Brewster led four opposing players in double figures with 14 points, posting four assists, three shots beyond the arc and three steals.
Both programs shot 46 percent from the floor, but the Terriers hit eight total 3-pointers to the Leopards' seven. Lafayette out-rebounded Boston, 33-28, including a 6-4 margin on the offensive glass.
