Women’s Basketball Captures Senior Day Victory Over Boston U.

Lafayette set to host in first round of Patriot League Tournament on Mar. 8

EASTON, Pa. – Sophomore guard Teresa Kiewiet led the Leopards on offense with 19 points in their 63-58 victory over Boston U. at Kirby Sports Center on Saturday.

Guards Abby Antognoli and Sauda Ntaconayigize also scored in double figures, each netting 12 points. Antognoli tacked on a season-high eight assists.

Saturday's matinee also served as Senior Day for the women's basketball program. Before tip-off, seniors Halee Smith and Antognoli were honored for all of their hard work over their careers on College Hill.

The visitors were first to put points on the board, but the Leopards responded quickly with a 7-2 spurt, taking a three-point lead (7-4). With 3:44 to go in the first quarter the game was knotted at eight points apiece before buckets by sophomores Tasha Chudy and Brynn Beffert put Lafayette back in front (12-8). Kiewiet hit a shot right before the buzzer late in the period, tying things up (14-14) after one stanza.

Both sides continued to trade baskets in the early moments of the second period. Smith knocked down a pull-up jumper at the 7:31 mark which was the catalyst to a 9-0 run for the Leopards. Kiewiet gave the Maroon and White a 28-21 lead right before the Terriers began to wake up. Boston U. closed the first half with its own spurt of seven unanswered points and neither team could be separated (28-28) after 20 minutes on College Hill.

The Terriers just edged Lafayette in the third period, outscoring them 18-17. The Maroon and White trailed by as many as seven points early in the quarter. Boston U. led 37-31 prior to a 10-3 Leopards' run. Beffert put Lafayette back in front (41-40) with 3:17 to go in the stanza, but Anette Adler quickly restored the visitors' lead. Lafayette kept it close down the stretch and only trailed by one point (46-45) to end the third quarter.

Lafayette put together a 7-2 run to start the final period and never looked back. Antognoli (5) and Kiewiet (8) combined for 13 points, which proved to be enough to push the Leopards over the line. Boston U. cut its deficit to three points (59-56) at the 1:04 mark, but Kiewiet drained a clutch turnaround jumpshot to give the hosts some breathing room. Additional free throws by Antognoli and Kiewiet sealed the victory in crunch time.

With today's victory, Lafayette is now set to host in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament, which will be held on Mar. 8. The Leopards' opponent and game time are to be announced in the coming days.

The Maroon and White take the court at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Baltimore to conclude its regular-season schedule.
