EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette men's lacrosse hosted NJIT on Tuesday evening at Fisher Stadium and battled the visitors to a 14-4 victory. Reigning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week,
Riley Sullivan, continued his outstanding play for Lafayette, netting four goals and providing six assists for his third 10-point plus outing of the season.
JC Echezuria led the Highlanders' offense with two goals off of five attempts.
The Leopards got off to a fast start, putting away their first goal at the 14:09 mark credited to sophomore
Jack Massotto. Freshman
Joshua Heaney tacked on a score (9:37) before the visitors got on the board thanks to a goal by Isaac Vanzomeren. Senior
Nick Rossi and Sullivan both found the back of the net later in the period to take a 4-1 lead with just over three minutes in the stanza. The Highlanders scored two goals late in the quarter and only trailed by one (4-3) after 15 minutes at Fisher Stadium.
Lafayette dominated the second quarter, outscoring the visitors 3-0.
Liam Sargent,
Mason Hill, and Sullivan all rifled home goals to propel the hosts to a 7-3 advantage at the intermission.
The Maroon and White continued to score at will in the third period. Freshman Benjmain DiBattista got the Leopards rolling with a goal (12:51) before a scoreless four minutes followed his tally. The silence was broken by back-to-back goals by Lafayette, which featured tallies by Heaney and Sullivan. The hosts led 10-3 before Echezuria broke through their defense to grab his second of the day.
Lafayette put up three goals in the final quarter to advance to 4-3 on the season. Its final goal of the contest was scored at the 5:43 mark by
Jack Irish and he was assisted by his brother Billy.
Junior goalkeeper
Joe Doherty matched his season-low four goals conceded against the Highlanders, while making nine saves in between the pipes. Joey Schwarz stopped 10 shots for NJIT.
Senior
Evan Prince won 7 of his 15 faceoff attempts and he scooped up a game-high seven ground balls in the win. Vanzomeren finished the day going 8-18 from the x and he led the Highlanders with five ground balls.
The Leopards return to Fisher Stadium at noon on Saturday as they host Holy Cross for the team's Community Youth Day.
