EASTON, Pa. –The Lafayette baseball team dropped its series opener to Penn, 12-7, on Friday at Kamine Stadium.Â
The Quakers opened the scoring in the second, as Nick O'Brien laced a two-run double down the right field line to give Penn a 2-0 lead. The Quakers added three more runs in the third, bringing the score to 5-0.
Lafayette got on the board in the bottom of the third when sophomore
Matt Colella ripped an RBI-single to left field that scored senior
Ethan Swidler, making the tally 5-1.
In the fifth, the Leopards tied the game when senior
Michael Zarrillo lined an RBI-double to right center field and freshman
Jack Mislan ripped a two-run double. Junior
Bode Grieve hit a sacrifice fly to center field that tied the score, 5-5.
AÂ grand slam by Penn's Qwynn Ahearn in the top of the seventh allowed the Quakers to take back the lead, 9-5.
In the eighth, Lafayette cut into the deficit. Sophomore
Teddy Cashman and Grieve both scored on wild pitches, as Lafayette pulled within two.
The Quakers added three insurance runs in the ninth to make the final score 12-7.
Tommy Delany earned the win, pitching one inning without giving up a hit. Senior
Joe Skapinetz took the loss, tossing 6.0 innings, giving up eight runs on eight hits while striking out seven.
The Leopards close out their series against Penn on Saturday, taking on the Quakers in a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
