Leopards Notch First Patriot League Win

Basso earns his first collegiate win

EASTON, Pa - The Lafayette baseball team earned its first Patriot League win of the season, splitting a doubleheader against Holy Cross. Lafayette dropped game one, 6-5, and but bounced back to claim game two, 9-6, on Sunday at Kamine Stadium.

Just two pitches into the first inning of game one, C.J. Egrie ripped a two-run home run to left field to give Holy Cross a 1-0 lead.

Lafayette responded in the second with a sacrifice fly by sophomore Teddy Cashman that scored senior Michael Zarrillo and knotted up the score 1-1.

The Crusaders took back the lead, 2-1, in the third on an RBI-single to left field by Chris Baillargeon.

Lafayette regained the lead in the fifth. Sophomore Matt Colella slashed an RBI-single to center field and was followed by freshman Alex Barrist who lined a two-run single to left center field. Senior Easton Brenner drove in another run on a sacrifice fly, and Zarrillo had an RBI-single to left center field, as the Leopards jumped out to a 5-3 advantage.

Holy Cross countered with three runs of their own in the sixth to tie the game, 5-5.  The Crusaders then took the lead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Gianni Royer, which held to be the final score, 6-5.

Jaden Wywoda collected the win, working 6.0 innings, giving up six hits and five runs, while striking out seven. Luke LeMond earned the save, pitching a scoreless seventh. Sophomore Jeremiah Holder took the loss, throwing one inning while surrendering a hit and a run. Lafayette junior starter Trace Florio had a career-high eight strikeouts in 6.0 innings pitched.

Game two began with the Crusaders again scoring first, this time on an RBI-double down the left field line by Royer.

Colella tied the game on a bunt single and then the Leopards took the lead as a second run scored on a throwing error by Holy Cross, giving Lafayette the 2-1 advantage.

The Crusaders jumped back out in front in the third, driving in three runs in the frame for a 4-2 margin.

Lafayette again reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the frame, as another bunt single by Colella scored Barrist, and then freshman Jack Mislan laced a two-run triple to right field, bringing the tally to 5-4.

Holy Cross responded with a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to lead 6-5.

The Leopards countered in the fifth with an RBI-single to center field by junior Bode Grieve and a sacrifice fly by Mislan, giving the lead to Lafayette, 7-6.  The Maroon and White added two insurance runs in the eighth, on an RBI-groundout by Barrist and an RBI-bunt single by Brenner, which ran the final to 9-6.

Junior Owen Basso earned his first collegiate win, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings and striking out six. Pedro Leon took the loss, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out two.

The Leopards return to action when they host Delaware on Tuesday at 3 p.m. for a Liberty Bell Classic game.
