Softball Concludes Penn State Invitational

Leopards host doubleheader against Marist on March 14

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Lafayette dropped a 13-0 (final, decision, etc). to Penn State on Sunday in the final game of the Penn State Invitational. The Nittany Lions capitalized on a five-run first inning to pull away from the Leopards. 

Penn State opened the scoring in the first inning with a Maddie Gordon two-run triple to give the hosts an early advantage. RBI-singles by Meagan Ricks and Jenna Nelson tacked on two more runs before Michela Barbenente's sacrifice fly made it 5-0. Nelson's single was one of team-leading three hits on the afternoon.

Penn State added another run in the bottom of the second, courtesy of a Brooke Klosowicz RBI-ground out. The Nittany Lions scored seven runs in the final two home halves of the game, highlighted by Barbenente's two-home run game. Barbenente collected a team-high six RBIs in the contest, with three coming in the third inning and an two in the fourth.

Mady Volpe earned the win for the hosts after pitching three innings and allowing one hit. Freshman Sophia Alvarez-Backus was charged with a loss after giving up 12 earned runs on 13 hits.

Kylee Sweet and Dani Rosner were the only two Leopards to collect hits in the matchup, with one apiece.

The Maroon and White return to Easton on Friday, where they host a doubleheader with Marist before a two-game series against St. Peter's on March 16.
