Men’s Lacrosse Delivers Senior Day Victory Over No. 15 Boston U.

Senior captain Riley Sullivan paced the offense with two goals and two assists

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette men's lacrosse continued to make program history on Saturday in its 11-9 win over nationally-ranked Boston U. Saturday marked the first time the Leopards have reached four Patriot League wins in a single season and it was their second win over the nationally-ranked Terriers in two years.

The opening eight minutes of play were scoreless, before the Leopards struck first thanks to a goal by freshman Joshua Heaney. Just over a minute later, classmate Mason Hill doubled Lafayette's advantage (5:37). Both goalies only made one stop apiece in the stanza and the Maroon and White led 2-0 after the first.

Donald Varnerin put the Terriers on the board at the 11:40 mark, but the Leopards responded with three-straight goals courtesy of Jack Massotto, Liam Sargent and Hill. Boston U. trailed 5-1 with three minutes to go, but Brenden Kelly quickly cut the deficit to three goals after he found the back of the net (2:01). At the intermission, Lafayette was out in front 5-2.

The Leopards carried their first half success into the second, as Heaney registered his second tally of the day early in the period (12:28). Sullivan followed up with a score just over a minute later (11:22) to grant Lafayette a 7-2 lead. The Terriers woke up as the period progressed, scoring three unanswered goals to bring them within striking distance. Sullivan and freshman Benjamin DiBattista came up huge with goals in the final five minutes of the quarter to retake a four-goal advantage (9-5) with 15 minutes to go.

Both teams fiercely battled between the restraining lines in the beginning nine minutes of the final quarter. Boston U. eventually broke through with back-to-back goals by Jimmy O'Connell, which handed the visitors some life with less than five minutes to go. Heaney completed his fifth hat trick of the year with 3:18 to play, but Timothy Shannehan kept the Terriers in it with a score (1:40). With 37 seconds to go John Galbraith sealed the victory for Lafayette as he broke through Terriers' defensive line and calmly fired it home into an open goal.

Junior goalkeeper Joe Doherty had a big day in between the pipes for Lafayette, making a game-high 11 saves while scooping up four ground balls. His counterpart Will Barnes made nine stops in the loss.

The Leopards are back in action at 1 p.m. next Saturday as they travel to Virginia to conclude non-conference play.
