WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader at Army, falling 5-2 in game one and 9-4 in game two at Doubleday Field on Saturday.
Army jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings of play in game one. The Black Knights scored on a home run by Jack Quinlan in the first and then a two-run double by William Parker, along with a RBI-single by John McKillop in the third.
In the fourth, Lafayette responded, scoring on a fielder's choice by junior
Bode Grieve that plated two runs because of an Army throwing error, making the score 4-2.
In the fifth, the Black Knights brought the score to 5-2, adding an insurance run on an RBI-single just inside the left field line by Quinlan.
Andrew Berg collected the win, pitching 5.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits and striking out four. Robbie Penswick earned the save, working 1.1 scoreless innings.
Joe Skapinetz took the loss, tossing 5.0 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits with four strikeouts.
In game two, the Black Knights took a 6-0 lead after five completed frames, as Army scored on a pair of two-run doubles by McKillop and Michael Delph, an RBI-single by Parker and a double steal.
Lafayette broke into the scoring column in the sixth as freshman
Alex Barrist singled through the left side and drove in sophomore
Teddy Cashman. Later in the inning, sophomore
Matt Colella plated another run on an RBI-single that scored junior
Ethan Swidler and cut the Army Lead to 6-2.
In the seventh, The Maroon and White made it a 6-4 game as Grieve laced an RBI-single to right field and Cashman pushed across another run via an RBI-groundout. In the bottom of the frame, the Black Knights extended their lead back to five runs as Thomas Schreck blasted a three-run home run to make the final margin 9-4.
Justin Lehman earned the win, throwing 6.0 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits and striking out two. Kevin Reavey was credited with the save, pitching 3.0 scoreless innings.
Tristan Helmick took the loss, working 3.2 innings, allowing six hits, six runs and striking out three.
The Leopards close out their three-game series at Army with a single-game on Sunday at 1 p.m.
