EASTON, Pa. – Junior
Ethan Swidler's go-ahead RBI-single in the eighth inning pushed Lafayette to a 14-13 win over Wagner on Tuesday at Kamine Stadium.
Junior
Bode Grieve slugged two homers in the game, including a solo home run to left field in the second inning to to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
Wagner responded in the third with an RBI-single by Lukas Torres, tying the game 1-1. Lafayette took the lead right back in the bottom of the inning as sophomore
Matt Colella lined an RBI-single to left field. Sophomore
Teddy Cashman looped a two-run single into left field, and senior
Kaleb Willis went up the middle with another RBI-single for a 5-1 Leopards' lead.
The Seahawks cut the Lafayette margin to 5-4 in the fourth as Xavier Ulrich and Connor Roche recorded an RBI-double and an RBI-single, respectively.
The Maroon and White again drove in four runs in the fourth, bolstering their lead to 9-4. Colella, Grieve and Cashman all plated runs.
Wagner made it a three-run game in the fifth on a two-run single to right field by Matteo Matthews, which brought the tally to 9-6.
The Leopards found the scoring column in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Colella. Then in the sixth, Wagner scored its seventh run of the game on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the sixth, Willis blasted a solo home run to center field, extending the Lafayette lead to 11-7.
In the seventh, Wagner pulled within 11-9 game as the Seahawks scored on a wild pitch and an RBI-groundout, and then took the lead in the eighth. Ulrich hit an RBI-double to right center field and then Matthews ripped a three-run home run to give the Seahawks a 13-11 lead.
In the bottom of the inning, Grieve hit his second home run of the game, a solo home run to right field. Later in the inning, freshman
Boden Fernsler smacked a double down the left field line that scored Willis and knotted up the score at 13-13. The next batter, Swidler, singled to left field, driving in Fernsler and staking the Leopards to a 14-13 advantage.
Freshman
Kellen Moore closed out the game for Lafayette, retiring the Seahawks in order and securing the 14-13 win for the Lafayette Nine.
Senior
Mike Romano collected his second win of the year, working one inning, giving up two hits and two runs. Moore earned his first collegiate save, pitching a scoreless ninth and striking out two batters. Nicholas Mazzotta took the loss, throwing one inning, surrendering four hits, three runs and recording a strikeout.
The Leopards are next in action when they travel to Holy Cross on Friday for a game that starts at 5 p.m.
