BOSTON, Mass. - Lafayette concluded the 2025 campaign on Sunday, dropping a 5-0 decision to Boston U.
Freshman
Sophia Alvarez-Backus earned the final start of the season for the Leopards, facing off against BU's Kasey Ricard. Alvarez-Backus navigated the Terrier lineup through the first two frames, allowing two hits over six outs. The two teams remained scoreless until the third inning, with Boston U. snagging an early 1-0 lead off of a Kylie Doherty home run.
The Maroon and White looked poised to answer in the visitors' half of the fourth, with
Emma Ahlborn and
Maggie Klug collecting singles to put runners on first and second with two outs. Ricard had an answer for the Leopards, getting the final out via a
Jocelyn O'Keeffe pop out.
Despite aggressive hitting and base running from the Terriers, Lafayette managed to escape a jam in the bottom of the fourth. A lead-off single from Camryn Lyons started things for BU before Tyesha Williams reached on a fielder's choice. Williams stole second to put a runner in scoring position for Addie Lucier. Alvarez-Backus forced Lucier to line out to
Regan Dillon, who promptly tossed the ball to
Caroline Hall at second for a double play.Â
After a slow start, BU's offense turned it up a notch in the fifth, pushing four runs across on just three hits. With one out and runners on first and second, Doherty tallied her second RBI of the game, shooting a single to center to score Aimee Metz. Brooke Deppiesse followed Doherty's lead with a single to center field. After one run came home on Deppiesse's single, Doherty was called out at the plate. After review, it was ruled that catcher
Maggie Klug obstructed the plate, allowing Doherty to score and make it 4-0 Boston U. A sacrifice fly from
Megan Coyle brought home Deppiesse, solidifying the 5-0 final.
Lafayette was limited to four hits, with Ahlborn, Klug,
Olivia Catalina and
Mary Grace O'Neill all notching singles. Alvarez-Backus was handed the loss after pitching 4.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, three of which were earned. Ricard moved to 23-10 on the year, pitching six scoreless innings with five strikeouts and a walk.
The Leopards conclude the 2025 season with a 7-31 record and a 5-13 mark in conference play.
