SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Washington State Cougars captured their first win of the new season against Lafayette on Saturday evening, winning the contest 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-16). The Maroon and White, playing in their second contest of the day, tallied eight blocks as a team.
The Leopards faced an early 2-0 difference in the first set against the PAC-12 opponent. A service error and a block assist from
Destiny McKenzie and
Abby Nicholson quickly tied things up. Washington State responded with a 9-2 run to push its lead to 11-4. Lucie Blazkova was the driving force for the Cougar offense, recording four services aces within five points. Looking for the set point, Eliana Tia rose to the occasion for the opponent, slapping a kill to secure the first set win.
After dropping the first set, Lafayette began the second with a more patient approach, as the Leopards' first four points all coming via error. With the Cougars leading by two (6-4), the Maroon and White relied on
Carol Ulichney and
Mackenzie Calhoun to kick-start the attack. After a Ulichney service error, the senior made up for it with a kill. Washington State collected a kill of its own before
Hannah Ehrich-Pollock and Calhoun cut the lead to 8-7. The two teams traded scores until the final three points. Blazkova and Taryn Vrieling tallied their 13th and sixth kills, respectively, to wrap up the set.
Set three began with Lafayette jumping out to an early 8-5 lead. The Cougars answered with a 16-3 run to retake the led (22-11). The momentum swing proved to be decisive, as Washington State collected the set and the win.
Ehrich-Pollock locked down the middle, recording four block assists and a solo block in three sets. Ulichney paved the way in kills for the Leopards, with seven. Calhoun recorded 15 assists in game two, building on a strong performance in game one.
Lafayette concludes the Utah Classic when it takes on the hosts on Saturday at 1 p.m.
