Leopards Battle Colgate to a 1-1 Draw to Open Patriot League Play

Zaffanella scores her third goal of the season on Saturday

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette women's soccer hosted Colgate to open Patriot League play in a match that concluded in a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Gummeson Grounds.

Neither team scored in the first half, although the Raiders had an 5-1 shot advantage.

In the second half, Colgate broke through the 0-0 deadlock, as a foul in the box awarded the Raiders a penalty kick. Bianca Howitt blasted a shot to the lower left corner of the goal, putting the Raiders in front, 1-0, with 32 minutes left to play.

Just four minutes later in the 62nd minute, senior Katrina Santelli ripped a shot from point-blank range that was saved by Colgate keeper Ella Poppinga and then re-directed to junior Nadia Zaffanella. Zaffanella sent the ball into the goal for her third score of the season, tying the match, 1-1.

Both teams played excellent defense for the remaining 28 minutes of the match, and the final tally remained a 1-1 deadlock.

Lafayette was led in shots by Santelli with three, two of which were on goal. As team, the Leopards had six total shots, four of those being on goal.

Junior goalkeeper Catherine Apker played the full 90 minutes, recording three saves. Her Colgate counterpart, Poppinga, also was credited with three saves.
